Xaraés, a birders paradise

As one of our guests said in 2005 “Xaraés is a real birders paradise” . Its landscape is the southern Pantanal in a nutshell: all ecotypes are present, even during the driest months it still has swamps and a river with more or less stagnant or flowing water and even more important: it has the unique combination between cattle farming and nature conservation. All these factors together are highly attractive for birds, and their followers the human birdwatchers. Xaraés Ecotourism welcome amateurs but also professional ornithologists. Bilingual guides with an excellent knowledge of the area and the location of even the most reclusive and shy birds are always available.

Birds at Xaraés

Not only are all southern Pantanal ecotypes present at Xaraés but their area is also extensive enough for viable populations of several rare species. It is one of the better locations for Hyacinth Macaws. Flying over or searching for palmnuts, they always offer an unforgettable experience. Around the Pousada you can find several species of parrots, Campo Flickers, Ferruginous Pigmy-Owl, tanagers, Crested Oropendola, Troupials and, when there are enough flowers, our flying jewels, the hummingbirds.
Bare-faced Curassow, Undulated and Small-billed Tinamou are ground dwellers in several of our shrubs. Higher up you can always look for Green-barred Woodpecker, Spot-backed Puffbird, Blue-crowned Trogon, Barred Antshrike and, in the canopy, Golden Yellowthroat and Giant Potoo. Our guides also have an excellent eye for the more difficult flycatchers and tyrants, such as Bran-coloured Flycatcher and Brown-crested Flycatcher, Black-tailed and Black-crowned Tityra and certainly the Eleania’s.
Swamps and reedlands are great spots for waders, herons and spoonbills. Unicoloured Blackbirds, with its not so “unicoloured” females, and Scarlet Blackbird are very curious birds and frequently fly up just to see who is now training their binoculars on them. Along the rivers there is a change to see the smallest Kingfisher in Brasil: the Pigmy Kingfisher. The keen and patient birder could be awarded with other sightings of hard to find birds such as Least Bittern or Common Snipe.
High up in the sky or perched on a branch raptors are often waiting for their prey.
Savannah Hawk,Snail Kite and Black-collared Hawk are always seen. But Xaraés is also a good location for Crane Hawks, Pearl Kite and Black-chested Buzzard Eagle.

Make more of your birding trip to the Pantanal

The Pantanal is a mosaic of different areas with their own characteristic flora and fauna. Xaraés is an excellent focal point for day-trips in the southern part. For
the northern part, best reached out of Cuiaba (Mato Grosso), we could advise another top-location for birders: Fazenda Curicaca Lodge. Along the Transpantaneira it is easily reached by car. For more information send an e-mail to their director, Helder Cintra Freitas (curicaca@terra.com.br or helderfreitas@terra.com.br)
